It's too "gooey" for actual machine use. It covers the metal in a thin dry "wax" that closes it up from water and dirt. It sounds exactly like Waxoyl and Cosmoline, right down to the color, and comes in spray cans. Here's a CRC version of what I believe is similar to cosmoline, from reading one of the particular reviews. WD40 is a simple solvent that will clean the "wax" off.
